YMMV / Superman: Grounded

Go To

  • Captain Obvious Aesop: The message against drug dealing and child abuse is certainly in the right place, but Superman reacts to them as if they were some radical, new ideas.
  • Growing the Beard: The arc saw a significant improvement in quality when Chris Roberson took over writing duties. When that happened, Superman went from Walking the Earth and lecturing people to Walking the Earth and actually saving lives.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Superman talking down the suicidal woman.
    • In Superman #705, Superman helps an abused son and wife by denouncing the father to the authorities. When the man is arrested, with the policewoman explaining he will receive a restraining order, Superman takes an extra precaution, and gives the son his phone number.
Superman: I want you to call this number once a day, for as long as you want, and leave a message. Just tell me how you're doing and what you're up to. But you have to be sure to do it every day. Because if there's ever a day when I don't hear from you— (gives the father a Death Glare) —there will be consequences.
  • Never Live It Down: The infamous "Over there has to stand for itself" speech became a running gag, especially for Linkara.
  • Signature Scene: Superman and the suicidal woman, Felicity Rose, a callback to a similar scene in All-Star Superman - and is almost as moving.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: The woman who slapped Superman and started off the comic. She's angry at Superman for not saving her husband from an inoperable brain tumour with his x-ray vision. Nonetheless, she does not explain why Superman's heat vision is superior to all medical technology for the purposes of removing inoperable brain tumours, or why she is chewing Superman out when there are other heroes with abilities perfectly capable of removing the tumor, and she also dismisses the fact that Superman was preoccupied with events of New Krypton that concerned millions of lives, which would include said husband, making the woman come off less sympathetic and more selfish.
