YMMV / Super Dark Times

Go To

  • Alas, Poor Scrappy: Daryl is a crude and obnoxious Fat Bastard with no respect for anyone, but his death is so gruesome and drawn out that you can’t help but feel for him, even despite the fact he totally had it coming.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Does Josh go after Allison and Meghan simply because he developed a bloodlust after killing Daryl and John? Or is it because he's infuriated at the fact Allison likes Zach more?
    • How much at fault is Josh for murdering Daryl? While Daryl brought a huge amount of his death on himself by refusing to listen to Josh and the others and being a borderline asshole, it should be noted that Josh already voiced annoyance and hatred towards Daryl due to said asshole nature.
    • How evil you find Josh really depends on your own interpretation and how much you believe his guilt. While his murder of Daryl is undoubtedly an accident, his behavior becoming worse and culminating in trying to kill Allison, Meghan and Zach is entirely on purpose. Did killing Daryl activate a hidden Blood Lust that was always boiling under the surface (especially given Josh's somewhat negligent home life), and it merely opened a can of worms that would have to faced with inevitably? Or did the trauma and guilt of killing Daryl warp his morality and self-esteem and make him less attached to others, and Allison liking Zach was the final push? Or possibly some combination of the above? While his odd behavior after Daryl's death can suggest the latter, it's also understood that children who deal with trauma are likely to engage in illegal and immoral behavior.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The opening scene leaves a lot wondering what's the symbolism of a deer who ran into the school and was put out of it's misery?
  • Ho Yay: Zach and Josh really invoke this a lot throughout the movie. Most notably Zach gently holding Josh's head and assuring him he didn't kill Daryl on purpose. Even Zach proclaims his love to him despite it being a way to stop Josh from killing him.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Josh's murder of Daryl can be chalked up as an accident, but when John is found dead, it's obvious Josh begins to show shades of darkness.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Daryl's death. The scream he lets out and coupled with the small amount of ominous music and his attempts to breathe through the gash on his neck is horrifying.
    • Any of Zach's dreams, but the most terrifying one has to be dreaming of having sex with Allison on Daryl's resting place only for Zach to look up at Josh giving him a heavy Death Glare.
    • The penultimate fight between Josh and Zach, consisting of Zach slicing Josh with the katana.
  • The Scrappy: Invoked with Daryl since most of the film shows how nobody doesn't like him and his disappearance shows how little people think of him.
    • Charlie isn't liked as well, mostly due to his lack of involvement in the plot and doing nothing other than refusing to listen to Josh.
  • The Woobie: Allison spends half of the movie trying to get close to Zach, who's shaken up by Daryl's murder and then gets almost is killed by Josh who ended up killing her friend Meghan. She gets better, but damn.
    • Iron Woobie: Josh and Zach, both arguably are struggling and are guilt ridden by Daryl's murder, but their eventual degradation to paranoia and violence doesn't help their cases. Josh especially considering his lack of remorse near the end.
