YMMV / Star Trek Voyager S 2 E 7 "Parturition"

  • Angst? What Angst?: Kes' subplot. She had such a terrible time coming to grips with two men fighting over her, even crying to Harry at one point, and then Tom and Neelix get back on the ship all buddy-buddy, roll credits. Even Kes is just like "okay then."
  • Author's Saving Throw: Twice over. The producers felt that Tom Paris wasn't used to his full potential in season 1, and wanted to give him some more spotlight. On top of that, producer Michael Piller felt Neelix' possessiveness and jealousy towards Kes was "unattractive" and wanted a tidy end to the whole Love Triangle. Indeed, a common fan reaction to this episode is "glad that's over," and while the episode doesn't exactly do much for Neelix (who would have to wait a while longer for some real Character Development), it did add some maturity to Tom Paris, which his actor appreciated.
Robert Duncan MacNeil: I never thought the Kes thing was right. It made Paris look really bad, flirting with Kes. Luckily [...] they really cleared it up and dropped it so Neelix and Paris could become the Odd Couple.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: An attempt, as mentioned above, to do this for Neelix. Let's just say it was the first of such attempts.
  • Special Effects Failure: The alien egg baby looks straight off the puppet sitcom Dinosaurs.
