YMMV / Star Trek: Strange New Worlds S2E09 "Subspace Rhapsody"

Go To

  • Epileptic Trees: Quite a few people are certain that Batel’s priority one mission involves the Gorn next episode (which is titled "Hegemony", of all things) and that she isn’t making it out. (UPDATE: It doesn't involve the Gorn until they crash the party. As of the end of the finale, Batel's survival remains uncertain.)
  • Fanfic Fuel: Enterprise was not the only ship affected by the anomaly. At least a dozen more starships, and very likely more (as well as wherever Bob April happened to benote ), had their crews suddenly burst into song offscreen, and even a good portion of the Klingon Empire was affected as well. The possibilities for musical-themed fanfics for every single character active during the TOS era of Star Trek are literally endless. (For example, did April display his "surprisingly beautiful baritone" in a solo number or a duet with Una?)
  • Older Than They Think: Fan series Star Trek: Excelsior had the same idea back in 2009!
  • Refrain from Assuming:
    • The opening song "Status Report" has also been referred to as "Apologies (The Most Confounding Thing)" or "Most Unusual, So Peculiar".
    • Very briefly on the main recap page, “I’m The X” was referred to as “I’m The Ex”.
  • Spiritual Successor: Has very similar narrative bones to the Buffy episode "Once More With Feeling", with both episodes using song to reveal characters' innermost feelings against their wills, and both episodes released special posters highlighting the fact that they were a Musical Episode as well as releasing the soundtrack. There's also nods to the episode, such as the worry about turning into bunnies and a Shout-Out towards the song "I Have A Theory".
  • Tear Jerker:
    • "How Would That Feel" is a highly emotional song that gives us a glimpse of an imaginary happy life for Kirk and La'an. Christina Chong's powerful delivery helps sell it. It's then followed up when she confesses her feelings for him, only for him to tell her about Carol, completely dashing her hopes.
    • "I'm the X" features Spock singing about how his pain following Chapel breaking up with him (right on the tail of T'Pring ending their engagement) has convinced him that romance is pointless and he will redouble his dedication to logic and reason over any sort of emotion.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Probably the only real complaint about this episode that the fandom can agree on is the lack of musical genres represented, wishing they had a few more like the aforementioned "Once More With Feeling".
