YMMV / Star Trek S1 E11 "The Menagerie, Part I"

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Captain Pike was revealed to have suffered his infamous injuries while trying to rescue cadets during a training exercise gone wrong, being bombarded with heavy delta radiation to the point he was left as an invalid. Star Trek: Discovery revealed that Pike was not only made aware of this fate that awaited him, but he willingly chose to accept it in order to save the future, meaning he spent at least eight years knowing he would end up like this. It somewhat overlaps with Heartwarming in Hindsight however, as Pike and his willingness to accept what would befall him meant how much he cared for Starfleet.
    • Pike's fate of suffering a debilitating injury during an on-duty accident is on its own a bit eerie, as the actor who originally played him in "The Cage," Jeffrey Hunter, ended up suffering a serious concussion because of an on-set accident in November 1968, which likely played a role in his death as a result of an intracranial hemorrhage just a few months later.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds adds a much deeper meaning to Spock's willingness to risk his career to help his old captain—Had Pike not accepted his fate and tried to warn the cadets of what awaited them, a war with Romulus would have erupted and Spock would have been left to a horrific fate in Pike's place. Spock somewhat learning of this leaves him with a debt of gratitude, hence his actions in this episode.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Spock mutinied just like his adopted sister.
