• Ass Pull: The twist ending involves the old man in the cave revealing himself to be Sandy all along who claims she was testing SpongeBob and Patrick’s survival skills. For her to have “planned the whole thing” like she says, she would have had to anticipate Patrick opening the door to her truck and falling out with the all the necessary supplies. It’s all just a little too contrived for the twist to make sense.
• They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: "To Save a Squirrel" starts in a interesting place, with SpongeBob and Patrick trying to prove to Sandy that they can be good survivalists. Instead, they quickly fall off the truck and burn through all their supplies. Sandy is hardly in the episode afterwards, outside of her cave fish disguise, which isn't revealed to be her until the very end.
