Ray is this, a fair amount of people find the jokes at his expense unfunny and cruel, comparing it to jokes from Family Guy about Meg and feel bad for him. Others hate him for his rather creepy behaviour towards women, an over focus on dating and girls for his character and in general being a flat character.
Maya is either seen as a passionate if overbearing mother who will do anything for her son or a rude and entitled woman who regularly abuses those around her and gets away with it because she's the mother of a disabled child.
Broken Base: Though the series has been lauded as "groundbreaking" due to casting Micah Fowler as J.J. (as both have cerebral palsy), many disabled commentators point out that the Pilot is more about J.J.'s family reacting to their new situation instead of J.J. himself. However, the rest of the series does have a large focus on JJ.
Seasonal Rot: The later part of season 2 and season 3 so far have been seen as a step down in quality, mainly due to too much focus on romance and dating, unfunny and cruel jokes about Ray and Maya being at times a mary sue who is never wrong.
