YMMV / South Park S10 E6 "ManBearPig"

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop: "It is wrong to treat global warming as a singular apocalyptic event". The main expression of denialism in this episode involves the citizens of South Park panicking at the onset of global warming even as nothing noticeable happens around them. Critics have noted that this seems to be a bit of accidental commentary on the struggle within climate science to properly communicate the impacts and complexity of global warming to the wider public, which leads to more modern works like Don't Look Up being criticized for trying to simplify climate change by presenting it as the exact kind of extreme one-off natural disaster that this episode (probably unintentionally) made fun of.
  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: Cave of the Winds is a real tourist attraction in Colorado.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: With climate change becoming a bigger problem in today's society, this episode's vicious mockery of it has become quite hard to stomach. It doesn't help that Parker and Stone mistakenly assumed that Gore was simply jumping on the issue of global warming to set himself up for another presidential run in 2008, meaning that what at the time was intended to mock Gore as being an irrelevant has-been now comes across purely as mockery of his climate change activism. This was acknowledged and addressed in Season 22's "Time to Get Cereal" and "Nobody Got Cereal?" which made clear that ManBearPig (ie, climate change) is definitely real.
  • Memetic Mutation: After this episode, ManBearPig became memetically associated with Al Gore and/or global warming, and used by some conservative activists to downplay climate change.
