  • Designated Hero: Zeke does absolutely nothing heroic except not be the killer and threaten the man molesting his stepdaughter. Fortunately, at the end of the film Carly realizes what a pathetic jerk he is and dumps him.
  • The Un-Twist:
    • Although both of Carly's love interests can come across as pretty sleazy, Jack seems far more menacing and creepy—he attacks Carly in the park, then tries to play it off as a joke, shows up at her housewarming party uninvited and unannounced, and later breaks into her apartment itself—though he tries to claim that this is just to warn her about Zeke. With Zeke's own suspicious behavior, it's still a surprise when Jack is revealed as the killer. Though Zeke turns out not to be much of a prize himself—Carly is just one of many of his conquests, he's a voyeur spying on all residents of the building, and it's shown that he knew all along that Jack was the killer, but kept the information to himself rather than turning him in, because doing so would have revealed his voyeurism.
    • The original version of the film had Zeke as the killer. Had that remained the ending, Jack's behavior would have been a classic Red Herring.
  • Strangled by the Red String:
    • Zeke declares his love for Carly when they've only slept together a few times and had what appears to be ONE date. Carly even tells Jack He's Not My Boyfriend.
    • It's even worse in the original ending, when they get married, even as she herself lampshades this, asking him, "What are we going to do, watch TV all day"?
