* OnceOriginalNowCommon: This game was hugely popular when it came out, but nowadays, it's hard to see what's so special about it since there are literally hundreds of games where you run around a forest at night looking for items while being chased by a monster.

* GoodBadBug: Players have discovered that the Slender Man is essentially locked into place if he's in your field of vision whether you can see him or not. People have exploited this by going into the woods then when Slendy shows up, they position themselves so that Slendy is blocked by a tree. This leaves the Slender Man standing still in the woods like an idiot while the player sits unharmed.
* HypeBacklash: A lot of the community's backlash has less to do with the game itself, and more to do with its fans. A few people have looked into it and discovered the rest of the Franchise/TheSlenderManMythos, but a lot of people who were introduced to the Mythos through the game think that the game created the Slender Man, and some will even go so far as to say that Marble Hornets stole from Slender.

* CameraScrew: Both the protagonists are holding literal cameras, and both times the Slenderman screws with them while he is in proximity.

Requires Word Of God confirmation

* AuthorsSavingThrow: It was quite disappointing in the earlier versions that when you collected all eight pages, Slender Man still kills you and the game ends. The creators later made it so that when you win, Slender Man still catches you but the daytime becomes the opposite. Implying you survived.

Pop Cultural Osmosis is not YMMV, and Critical Research Failure is a disambiguation page. Not sure where else this could go.

* PopCulturalOsmosis[=/=]CriticalResearchFailure: An infamous example. Like the IAmNotShazam and HypeBacklash example above, the game's massive popularity had misled many people into thinking this game invented the Slender Man, even though the character originated from Something Awful and the game's inspiration comes from WebVideo/MarbleHornets. One particularly cringe worthy case involves Teens React claiming that the game was the inspiration for Marble Hornets when it was really the other way around. Later versions have since been addressing the issue by putting a Franchise/TheSlenderManMythos option on the start menu.

Removed a rude and unnecessary comment.

** Not to mention all the people who have somehow deluded themselves into thinking the Slender Man's name is one word.

About fans and critics praising it such audiences think it doesn't measure up. Not just disappointment.

* HypeBacklash: The community of the mythos seems to be displaying some of this towards the game.
** A lot of the community's backlash has less to do with the game itself, and more to do with its fans. A few people have looked into it and discovered the rest of the Franchise/TheSlenderManMythos, but a lot of people who were introduced to the Mythos through the game think that the game created the Slender Man, and some will even go so far as to say that Marble Hornets stole from Slender.
** Given that the game has a "scariest game ever" title, many people went into it expecting far more then what they got, assuming they checked it out at all.
*** Most of this really has to do with the type of game it is. It is an atmospheric piece, and as such, is not for everyone.
** Most people consider this game to be the instigator of the 'Collect X items' in later indie games.

Slender.

* FridgeHorror: What exactly does Slenderman do to you if he catches you? Some of the notes you get imply that he won't just kill you; he will either rape you or eat you, each sounding equally terrifying. It's even worse when you don't know how true those suggestions are. Either the writers are trying to encourage you to not get caught or they've witnessed/experienced it.

Not YMMV.

* HellIsThatNoise: The slow, foreboding, rhythmic beat that starts playing once you've found your first page. It grows in intensity as you gather more.
** The ScareChord that sounds off once he finds you.
** The sound of the static.

References to The Arrival are being cut.

** This has been fixed in the remake. If you can get into a position where you can see him without the static appearing, you can see that he's physically moving (and he walks as fast as you can run). And if you manage to get him stuck on something, he'll teleport off to the side of your line of sight. He does occasionally just stand there, but on those occasions, he's either not hunting you down, or he's blocking the only exit you have.
** Strangely, in the remake, you can put your back to a wall and stare into the woods for long periods of time without the Slender Man showing up. While it would be unwise (for obvious reasons) to rely upon this as a tactic, it does provide an immense psychological comfort.

** The hissing and snarling of the Proxy.

* MoralEventHorizon: It's strongly implied that the Slender Man . Ouch. Needlessly malicious, much?

** Doors in VideoGame/SlenderTheArrival are universally reviled by all players.
*** Later versions of The Arrival finally fixed the doors: now simply clicking on them with open or close them.

Added DiffLines:

* SpiritualAdaptation: Basically WebVideo/MarbleHornets in video game form.
