- Awesome Music: The haunting score
by Tangerine Dream is one of the band's finest works. - Nightmare Fuel: The rape scene, in large part because it's so sudden and unexpected. The fact that Mark is high on cocaine when he assaults Grace makes it even worse.
- Squick: The scene where Grace sneaks into Tommy's cage, and it's implied they have sex. Keep in mind, they're cousins.
- Tear Jerker: Oh so much. From seeing just how badly screwed up Ruth's branch of the family is to Mike's account of the abuse his mother suffered at the hands of her husband to Grace's assault at the hands of Mark, Shy People qualifies as one of the saddest films of 1987.
