YMMV / Shishunki Bitter Change

Go To

  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Oh, Yui. Her depressive episodes and general passiveness either make her sympathetic or a Wangsting teen, and her falling in love with Kazuma while still being overprotective of Yuuta around Tachibana is seen as hypocrisy. Then there's the ending of the webcomic, where she kills herself, thereby killing off Yuuta's old body as well...
    • Kazuma too, for similar reasons. He either makes for a good Secret-Keeper who's torn between his two friends' strange situation, or a hypocrite and a poor friend for crushing on and siding with Yui while Yuuta has to deal with his problems on his own.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Yuuta/Tachibana has by far the most fan following, due to the "good girl reins in the bad boy" dynamic and the latter's developing feelings for the former. A lot of fans hoped that Yuuta goes on to marry Tachibana or that Tachibana was the father of Yuuta's child in the webcomic's epilogue if he doesn't switch back into his old body.
  • It Was His Sled: Yuuta and Yui never switch back, Yui's long gone (implied to have killed herself) by the time Yuuta's married with child. One of the very first things you learn about the series, and it's the original incarnation's depressing ending.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Yuuta's breakdown in chapter 49, as he tries convincing Tachibana to not quit school, is really sad and heartbreaking to watch. It really shows that despite appearing happy and carefree all the time, deep down he desperately wishes to go back to being a guy, and be able to do things he can only long for, as a girl. And while Yui had Kazuma by her side to comfort her during her such moments of distress, Yuuta has to deal with most of it alone, making his whole situation even sadder.
    • When Yuuta and Yui are talking about their dreams in a certain chapter, he lies that he wants to be a web designer. The truth is he's wanted to become a soccer player since he was a little kid, but now he has just given up on that dream as he feels that it could never come true, due to the body swap. The irony of the situation makes this even more bittersweet: While Yui found a dream after the body swap, even if only a vague one, Yuuta was forced to give up on his lifelong dream of becoming a soccer player.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The final mini arc has both of the protagonists finally switch back after six whole years. However, the switch was brought on by them both being hit by a truck, and Yuuta doesn't even get a chance to absorb the situation because he was in critical condition from his accident injuries. Neither of them really gets time to go back to their families or readjust to their changed situations because Yui immediately wishes for them to swap again.

  • The Woobie: Poor Yuuta. Being separated from his loved ones, especially his little brother, took a toll on him, and in between dealing with his growing one-sided love for Yui and his growing pains in Yui's body, it's a wonder he's not as depressed as Yui is at the moment. Sometimes, you can't help but want to give the poor guy (or girl?) a hug due to all the crap he has to deal with, especially in chapter 54.
Yuuta (after feeling totally cornered due to Tachibana, Kazuma and Yui's words to him): Then, where the hell should my feelings go...?
