YMMV / Shaft (2019)

Go To

  • Ass Pull: The Hand Wave explanation that Richard Roundtree's Shaft was merely pretending to be Samuel L. Jackson's Shaft's uncle instead of his father, even well into his son's adulthood, can come across as a rather weak way to justify the "three generations of Shaft" marketing of this film. It very much comes off that everyone just forgot he wasn't Jackson's father in the previous film, and this was shoved in at the last second.
  • Critical Dissonance: On Rotten Tomatoes, the film scores a poor 33% with critics (the lowest for the Shaft franchise, below the 56% of Shaft in Africa) but maintains an impressive 94% with audiences. It also scored an A from CinemaScore (above 2000's Shaft's A-) but it does have a fairly unimpressive 6.4 on IMDb (though still above the 2000 Shaft).
