• Harsher in Hindsight: In 1937, composer and organist Louis Vierne died suddenly of a heart attack or stroke at the organ of Notre-Dame de Paris, with one foot on a pedal note, the same fate which befalls the organist in the film.
• Retroactive Recognition: Sir John Gielgud was a renowned stage actor in the UK by the 1930s, but he only had a handful of feature film appearances prior to 1960, and so would have been unknown to many filmgoers in 1936, particularly in the US.
