• Awesome Music: While the film itself isn't that great, the score by veteran composer Elmer Bernstein is out of this world, in particular the main theme.
• Fridge Horror: The ending of the film makes little sense as Alex heads to Earth with some incredibly ominous music in the background, until you remember that her refusal to sleep with the Captain would've been "penally unsocial" on Earth. She's heading for a lifetime of either rape or jail. Suddenly the music seems appropriate.
• Harsher in Hindsight: The tragedy of Alex and the Major's May–December Romance, due to his impending mandatory termination can be seen as quite ironic, given that Kirk Douglas outlived Farrah Fawcett by over a decade.
• Hilarious in Hindsight: The much older Adam takes a blue pill before having sex with Alex.
• Nightmare Fuel:
  • The film features perhaps the most terrifying robot in film history. Hector is introduced to us from the feet up (around 1:40 in this trailer), looking for all the world like a skinned, metallic corpse with tubes for veins and metal plates where its muscles would be. Slowly, more of it is revealed, until we come to its head... or lack of one. All it has on top are two insectile, twitching, glowing eyes on an arm. It doesn't talk — it merely flicks its eyes around to stare at you. When you combine those attributes with its measured tread, its deliberately inhuman movements and the fact that it's learning directly from the thoughts of the murderous, psychotic handler who has a stalker crush on Farrah Fawcett, it invokes the eeriest elements of the Uncanny Valley, essentially recreating Frankenstein's Monster in space. But scarier. What happens near the end of the film isn't pretty either: the handler places his own brain inside the robot, which wears the front of his face like a mask.
  • Earlier, Benson pulls off a Kill and Replace on Captain James by tossing him out of the airlock, where he quickly freezes then shatters into a million pieces when his icy corpse hits several wires.
• Special Effects Failure: When Captain James flies off the floor, the wires pulling him are extremely visible.
