YMMV / Rosebuds

Go To

  • Breakout Character: Plush Maria, who exploded in popularity before Rosebuds itself even became a regular strip.
  • Genius Bonus:
    • In "Word Up", Maricela calls Maria a "coccydynia" during an argument, causing said argument to grind to a halt while Maria looks it up. Coccydynia is the scientific term for pain in the coccyx or tailbone - in other words, a pain in the butt.
    • In "Piano Pal", Maricela recognises a piece played by Plush Maria as being the work of "Guaraldi". The strip was released on the 100th birthday of Charles M. Schulz, and Vince Guaraldi was the composer for Peanuts' various TV specials - the piece Plush Maria plays, shown in the form of sheet music, is "Linus and Lucy", Guaraldi's Bootstrapped Theme for the franchise.
  • Heartwarming Moments: As with Dee's previous comic, there are plenty of these, mostly involving Rosa showing her soft side:
    • "Motivation Monday" shows Rosa training hard at the gym, while staring wistfully at a "motivation wall" that's revealed to be full of pictures of her younger sisters. The narration from Maricela and Maria really sells it:
Maricela: She told me she's strong so she can stand up for herself and others in need.
Maria: Rosa told me the same thing! What kind of needs do you think would require Rosa's strength?
Maricela: Not sure, but they must be pretty important if our big sister has to get involved.
  • I Knew It!: Most people speculated that Maria had ADHD. an arc in 2023 reveals that to be the case with Maria being diagnosed with ADD.
  • Tear Jerker: One series of strips has Rosa picking out a cute dress for Maricela to wear. When Maricela suggests that Rosa would look good in a similar dress, Rosa flashes back to being bullied at high school for exactly that, and it's clear that she's still not over it.
  • The Woobie: Rosa has been established to have had a very traumatic childhood with one strip showing her being bullied over a dress she liked and another detailing how she was left behind at a fair for three weeks and forced to perform in their Freak Show because of how tall she was at the time. The latter comic is especially devastating due to the severe Parental Neglect.
