YMMV / Rick and Morty S7 E5: "Unmortricken"

Go To

  • Catharsis Factor: Needless to say, after all that Rick Prime puts Rick through, it was absolutely satisfying to see our Rick beat Prime to a bloody pulp, mercilessly and coldly, even if it did cost him a chance to stop Evil Morty from getting the Omega Device.
  • Fridge Horror: A lot can be inferred in the first twenty seconds of the episode: Evil Morty raising his hand in fear to a towering Rick suggests physical abuse, and there being no other Smiths shown in the house raises questions; Rick in this universe may've never had a daughter or played a significant role in her life. Lastly, Evil Morty self-identifying himself as "a high maintenance Morty" means he knows about the multiverse: that some Mortys are cloned, trained, and sent to Ricks to be used, and that he's possibly one of them. This also implies the reasoning for his Rick's willingness to let him quit: he could easily get a new Morty, and who knows what would happen to Evil Morty after that.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Rick C-137 killing Rick Prime for good hits very differently after Justin Roiland was fired for unprofessional behavior. Especially exchanges like this...
Rick Prime: What's your life without me?!
    Rick C-137: Let's find out...
  • He Really Can Act:
    • Ian Cardoni truly shows off his skills in this episode, with the scene where Rick kills Rick Prime singled out as a highlight due to how amazingly he manages to sell Rick Prime's narcissism while choking through a mouthful of blood while at the same time perfectly expressing Rick's cold yet unbridled fury as he beats the man who ruined his life to death with his fists.
    • By that same token, Harry Belden really shines as Evil Morty, imbuing him with more emotional depth than his usual detached malevolence.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Killing Rick C-137's Diane and Beth was pretty much already this. But Rick Prime outdoes himself completely by revealing that he also built a weapon that erased Diane infinitely across the Multiverse! All to spite every Rick for choosing to love their families over becoming amoral mad geniuses like him. He then decides to do it to other people C-137 cares about just to spite him for coming after him, and succeeds with Slow Mobius before C-137 and the Mortys stop him.
  • Shocking Moments: Nobody expected Rick Prime to be Killed Off for Real mid-season to say the least.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • Pretty much no one expected Slow Mobius, a one-off gag character back from the Season 1 finale who had less that 20 seconds of screentime, to not only return, but actually play a small but important role in the episode.
    • More importantly, nobody expected Evil Morty to make a grand return and to play a major role in this episode since it wasn't really teased by the trailers.
