YMMV / Rick and Morty S3 E9 "The ABCs of Beth"

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Does Beth really know that their current Rick is from an another universe and not her original dad, or did she simply sarcastically quote Rick?
    • We saw in "Rickshank Rickdemption" and will see in other episodes that C-137 was a kind and devoted family man who, on seeing what he might become if he continued his research into portal guns, decided to abandon that and pursue something else instead. It doesn't quite gibe with the man who ignored his daughter and built her murder implements to keep her happy. This Beth was raised by one of the Ricks that abandoned their families and thus was already the arrogant murderhobo that C-137 eventually became. Or maybe every Beth is kind of like that. And maybe decades of alcohol abuse and trauma and not ever thinking about his past means Rick doesn't really remember his family that well and just accepts he always was the man he is now.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Cannibalistic incest as the only way to survive being trapped in a magical children's paradise.
  • Fridge Horror: How exactly was Tommy's father convicted of not only killing Tommy, but eating him, unless Beth planted evidence to hide her tracks?
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Practically everything with Rick's and Beth's storyline this episode becomes this after Season 5's "Rickmurai Jack" and Season 6's "Solaricks", especially Beth's abandonment issues stemming from her dimension's original Rick leaving Beth and her mom. These episodes reveal that "our" Rick, C-137, never abandoned his original wife and daughter at all, and instead, they were murdered by another Rick ("our" Beth's true Rick) when Beth was still a child. It's unknown if C-137 built a Froopyland for his Beth, too, and whether or not she was also displaying Troubling Unchildlike Behavior, but given that "our" Beth claims she acted that way because she was trying to get her dad's attention (since her original Rick was apparently more aloof and distant) while C-137 was shown to be much more loving and attentive to his family than most Ricks were, it's likely that wasn't the case. As such, it basically means that Rick C-137—who most certainly is still a pretty bad father in many ways—at least wasn't guilty of the neglect and abandonment that his current Beth suffered, but shoulders the blame for it as a consequence of living in an alternate dimension with an alternate version of his daughter.
  • Squick: Sex with animals/offspring and cannibalism are morally wrong on their own. Putting them together as a way to simply survive is just as funny as it is horrifying. Both Rick and Beth are equally disturbed.
  • Strawman Has a Point: You can't exactly blame Jerry for being afraid to dump Kiara when she's a hunter who could've killed him any moment she decided to.
