YMMV / Red Dwarf Season XII "Timewave"

Go To

  • Anvilicious: The episode hammers in the point over and over again that criticism is something both vital and healthy, and that a society in which no criticism is allowed will quickly become totally dysfunctional. While the episode does try to address both sides of the argument by saying that people can eventually just start criticizing for the sake of it, it comes across as very half-hearted by comparison.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: Of series co-creator Rob Grant's novel Incompetence, which depicts a world where it's not possible to refuse to hire a person on the grounds that they're not up to the job, or fire them when they prove they're actually not up to it.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: When the episode's plot was first announced, some fans were looking forward to it as a critique of "safe spaces" and the effects this attitude can have on creativity. However, the end result is an episode set aboard a ship where the crew spend their days doing the campiest, silliest things imaginable, the sight of which if anything is the opposite of the criticism people generally have of "safe spaces" — namely that it leads to creative sterility and overly safe comedy — and which doesn't do more to explore its concept than just saying "criticism is necessary" over and over.
