  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • South. She's a massive Jerkass, but her insecurities and constantly getting taken advantage of makes it really hard not to feel bad for her. It gets even worse after North is killed.
    • Carolina, who's just a mess of guilt and rage, and still prone to idiotic and anger-fueled decisions.
    • Washington, who's cold and vengeful, but his declining mental state and paranoia make him very sympathetic.
    • Tex, who's a jerk, but has a ton of issues with reconciling her identity as Tex with her status as an AI and even more issues with self-loathing.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Caboose's rapidly declining intelligence and sanity is played for as much tragedy and horror as possible; it's confirmed to have been caused by Church messing around in his head, and the reason for his amnesia afterwards is because the only way his brain could recover from it was to delete all memories of Church altogether. It puts all of his funny antics in an incredibly tragic light, as Wash points out to Church and Tucker at different points; they can mock him for his stupidity all they want, but they'll eventually have to deal with the fact that it's their fault he's like this.
    • Delta's Heroic Sacrifice.
Delta: Please remember that I am, and always will be, your friend. And that you, York, are worth the sacrifice.
    • Afterwards, Carolina is guilt-ridden for inadvertently causing it and desperately begs the critically wounded York not to die repeatedly. And then there's York's reaction after he comes to.
Carolina shifted uncomfortably but she didn't leave his side. All of the sudden she was planted firmly beside him, hands touching him, concern so strong that if Delta had been there even he couldn't have been confused by the social meaning behind her sentiment.
But Delta wasn't there. And York, for the first time since Freelancer began tearing them apart, somewhat wished Carolina wasn't either.
    • North's death at the hands of the Meta. His last words, telling South he trusts her, makes it even worse.
