YMMV / Pay It Forward

  • Fridge Brilliance: The downer ending is just to ask the viewer if they are willing to Pay It Forward, even if it means sacrificing their own life.
  • "Funny Aneurysm" Moment: There's a scene where Kevin's Spacey's character stops a pedophilie from possibly taking Trevor. In 2017 there were allegations of sexual abuse and misconduct made against Kevin Spacey by several people who claimed Kevin abused them as teens.
  • Glurge: Tearjerker + An Aesop broken by the tearjerking event = glurge.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Haley Joel Osment, known for getting popular by seeing dead people plays a kid that dies.
    • The scene where Eugene defends Trevor from a pedophile is extra cringeworthy now that the accusations against Kevin Spacey have been made public.
    • Another harsh moment regarding the same actor. He is well known among gamers for being the English voice actor of Sora, the main protagonist of the Kingdom Hearts series. In Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, Sora dies... though unlike Trevor, he gets revived.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The kid Trevor was stabbed protecting was played by Marc Donato. Ten years later, Donato played a bullying victim who decides to violently torture his bullies.
  • It Was His Sled: Trevor is stabbed by bullies.
  • Mis-blamed: Trevor dies in the book the movie was based on as well, although the circumstances were changed. In the book, he's killed in the Washington, D.C. area after meeting the president.
  • Romantic Plot Tumor: This is a movie about an alcoholic single mother falling in love with a well-educated social studies teacher…oh, and something about a kid who tries to change the world.
