- Complete Monster: Nick Laemie is the father of the young hero Michael and a cannibalistic Serial Killer who murders people for food. A brutal sociopath, Nick keeps a meat locker full of corpses and pulled his wife into the cannibal lifestyle. Murdering his son's guidance counselor, Nick tries to force Michael into cannibalism. When Michael resists, Nick tries to murder him, killing his own wife when she tries to protect Michael.
- Cult Classic: The film received middling reviews and was not a box office hit, but did get a following around horror fans.
- Designated Hero: While it might be understandable Michael was afraid to face his father's wrath, he still left Millie Dew, one of the few people who actually believe the truth about his parents, to die. He runs upstairs to his room, but not before shutting Millie in the basement just as Nick comes home, and left to her own devices, gets killed in short order. Considering he has an idea of what his father is like, you would think he would have at least tried to help her escape, but she's killed and her blood is pretty much on his hands.
- Harsher in Hindsight: When Nick tells Michael one of his stories about being scared of the dark, which ends with him saying the real darkness lies inside the head. This becomes prophetic with Randy Quaid's mental decline 20 years later.
- Love to Hate: Nick Laemle is a terrifying prescence who tried to mold Michael into the cannibal lifestyle. Randy Quaid give a nice, eerie performance.
- Moral Event Horizon: Nick crosses it when he tries to kill Michael after he refuses to eat the human meat. It's at this point where his wife Lilly turns on him and tries to stop him, only to get killed herself.
