Misuse, trope doesn't apply to arcs contained on a singular movie

* ArcFatigue: Of the FourLinesAllWaiting variety, as it's generally considered by both detractors and defenders that ''Uprising'' has just too many subplots stuffed into its screentime. To compare, the first film focused mainly on the characters learning to work out their personal troubles and function as teams of pilots, as well as the PPDC struggling to keep up against increasingly powerful Kaijus. However, aside from these two basic premises, which include the revamping of the latter with FusionDance in ''Uprising'', the sequel runs with the additional plots of a younger character trying to cope with her new life in the pilot cadet school, a seemingly evil MegaCorp building rival Jaegers and leading mysterious attacks, and even an [[spoiler:inner human conspiration in favor of the Precursors]]. It can be safely said that this film carried enough material and ideas to produce several installments or even a full-fledged TV series (which takes a revealing new light when one finds out director Steven S. [=DeKnight=] had only worked in TV series before having his film debut with ''Uprising'').

* FanonDiscontinuity: A large portion of the original film's fans like to pretend the followup doesn't exist, in large part due to its massive HappyEndingOverride, numerous [[TheyChangedItNowItSucks unpopular changes]] to tone, story, and characters, and the lack of any involvement from Creator/GuillermoDelToro (who, in turn, also [[https://collider.com/pacific-rim-2-guillermo-del-toro-comments/ ignores the sequel's existence]]).

* AmericansHateTingle: Despite the increased Chinese elements, the Chinese filmgoers don't buy it. [[https://movie.douban.com/subject/20435622/ The film gets a 5.5]] on China's most popular movie review site, and many find the China-pandering cringeworthy and brain-dead. However, the bulk of the criticism centers actually on Jing Tian and her character. Jing Tian had caused a massive backlash ever since she got roles in Legendary's movies (namely ''Film/TheGreatWall'' and ''Film/KongSkullIsland'') due to her connections instead of her skills to net her star roles. Many Chinese netizens even coined the term "Jing Tian Cinematic Universe" to connect all of her roles into a giant web of mockery.

** What were the PPDC doing while the Kaiju were gone? We know people were making rogue Jaegers and the Kaiju worshippers were also a threat (albeit a small one), but what othere troubles are they dealing with post-war?

Requires Word Of God confirmation

* AuthorsSavingThrow:
** The first film had Jaegers battle Kaiju in predominantly dark settings, making fans complain that it was considerably difficult to keep track of what was happening and therefore harder to follow the fight. The trailer alleviated this by presenting a lot of the action scenes in broad daylight. True to the trailer, all of ''Uprising'''s battle scenes take place in daylight, with the exception of the Jaeger drones' attack on the Shatterdomes.
** Many fans scratched their heads at the terribly slow and inefficient method used for Jaeger deployment --namely, fleets of cargo helicopters towing them to drop zones. When the action gets to the Shatterdome in this film, we almost immediately hear criticism of this exact plan, and attempts to improve it via ''booster rockets''.
** Another scratcher the fans noticed was why build giant robots to kill Kaiju when turrets lining the coast would work just as well and probably be cheaper? The first appearance of the Obsidian Fury shows that they DO have turrets now and no, they are not particularly effective at causing damage and being immobile are taken out by Fury effortlessly the moment they're used.[[note]]Though this is an example of ArtisticLicenseEngineering, since if Jaeger-mounted weapons can do damage to Kaiju or other Jaegers, there's no reason why stationary versions of the same weapons would be unable to do damage. In fact, since they wouldn't have the same weight constraints of Jaeger-mounted weapons, stationary turrets should in fact be more powerful and/or more durable. Though cost may be a factor- having a big Jaeger reactor for each one may not be economically feasible.[[/note]]
** The first film got criticized a bit for having Gipsy Danger being the only Jaeger doing the majority of fighting, while other Jaegers (especially an EnsembleDarkhorse like Cherno Alpha) are either destroyed or taken out of commission in a short time. As the trailers indicate, all four Jaegers shown fight together as a team during the final battle. Although this is actually subverted in the film itself; in the final battle three of the four Jaegers are curbstomped by the kaiju quite quickly, leaving Gipsy Avenger to take a lead role, similar to Gipsy Danger at the ending of the first film.

Newt's villain twist tends to be pretty divisive, as some see it as brilliant and (for those that disliked/hated Uprising) one of the few good things about the film while others think it completely ruined his character.
