YMMV / Outlander S 3 E 4 Of Lost Things

  • Adapted Out: In the books, after John passes Jamie's Secret Test of Character by refusing his offer of a sexual favor, Jamie gives him a kiss as thanks. It's a moment that John thinks of often when he thinks of Jamie in the Lord John novels, but was likely adapted out to avoid Ho Yay and accusations of queerbaiting.
  • Culture Justifies Anything: Lord Elsmere's reaction is definitely extreme and irrational by modern standards, but in a time period where honor is everything, finding out that you've been cuckolded is a grievous offense. William is particularly offensive to the Earl because English law at that time declares that a child born while a couple is married is irrevocably the offspring of the husband. This means the boy is the rightful heir of Elsmere's property and title even if he could 100% beyond a shadow of a doubt prove that the child was fathered by someone else. In a time where you could challenge a man to a duel for looking at your wife improperly, Elsmere is legally required to raise a child who will be bequeathed with all his land and title even if said child ends up looking the spitting image of another man.
  • Secret Test of Character: In the books, Jamie offers himself to Lord John in order to see if the man would take advantage of such an unethical offer. Because the 18th century considered homosexuals and pedophiles to be one in the same and due to his own rape trauma, Jamie fears entrusting Willie, who looks more and more like him each day, to John who is clearly sexually attracted to Jamie. By refusing the offer, John assuages Jamie's fears that he might sexually violate Willie at some point. Later on, when Claire asks what he would have done had John accepted, Jamie bluntly states that he would have killed him.
