  • Diagnosed by the Audience:
    • Several characters have commented that Rafe is a mentally unstable and needs help, which even Rafe himself admits. It is unclear what he may have; however his violent behavior, poor impulse control, self-loathing, and fear of abandonment suggest that he may have Borderline Personality Disorder.
    • There's been at least two short scenes displaying JJ's trouble with reading, hinting that he may suffer from undiagnosed dyslexia. He's also incredibly impulsive, hyperactive and talkative which may also be due to undiagnosed ADHD.
  • Iron Woobie: John B goes through a lot of torture and pain, both physical and emotional, from various sources just because he wants his dad back. And even after that, it turns out his dad really was dead. However, as of the end of Season 2, his dad is revealed to somehow still be alive, implying he may eventually get to reunite with his son. Season 3 does reunite father and son, which directs the plot for the rest of the season.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • If Ward Cameron didn't cross it when he killed John B's father then he most certainly does when he bribes a guard to have John B. killed while he was in prison. That's not even getting to the fact that he was willing to let him suffer the death penalty for a murder that he didn't commit.
    • Rafe crosses it when he attempts to drown his sister in a water bucket on the dock to prevent her from testifying against him and save himself from being convicted of sheriff Peterkin's murder.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: Most JJ/Kiara shippers call them "Jiara".
  • Tear Jerker: The last scene of season 2 set in the Outer Banks: After the Pogues and Cleo wash up on a deserted island and decide to make the best of it, the show flashes back to the Outer Banks, where Kiara's parents are hanging up missing person signs, Pope's dad is sitting silently in Pope's room with his head in his hand, and Topper is knocking on the Camerons' front door, looking for Sarah. And no one at all is waiting for JJ or John B.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Kiara is this especially in the second season, mostly for how outraged she is that her parents don't want her to... get pregnant as a teenager? Hang out with someone wanted for murder? Disappear from home for days at a time without telling them? Steal and destroy their stuff?
