  • Genius Bonus
    • The Wends and the Cimbri were real ancient Germanic tribes. In the book, the Wends are the parent race of the Cimbri, but they were two separate tribes in real life.
    • The slave ship is named St. Juste. In real life, Antoine Saint-Just was one of the most brutal members of the French Revolution. The slave ships's successor, an honest boat which employs former slaves from the St. Juste, is called Thermidor. In real life, the Thermidorian Reaction was the coup which saw Antoine Saint-Just and other revolution leaders overthrown.
    • In French, a nuit blanche (literally "white night") is an all-night festival. One of the busier taverns, that stays open late, is called White Night.
    • Names and lyrics of several English country dances pop up throughout the story
      • Bashful Swain and Cracking Chestnuts are used as tavern names
      • The chorus of Maid in Amsterdam is sung in one scene
    • A few classic works of art are obliquely referenced. The phrases "The night watch" and "dying Gaul" appear in the prose.
    • L'hirondelle des Faubourgs is a popular French song about a dying waif whose father abandoned his responsibility to take care of her. Jean-Marien Hironde lives in a town called Faubourg, and also suffers because of someone's irresponsible behavior toward him.
