YMMV / One Year on Probation

Go To

  • Anticlimax Boss: Kamoshida's downfall is not brought about by theatrical and supernatural means, but by Kawakami reporting to the police after investigating due to Akira's pleas.
  • Fridge Horror: Tae Takemi gave Akira medicine in order to treat his anxiety disorder. The In Medias Res prologue mentions that he nearly killed himself by swallowing a dozen pills at once in response to Shido's election, meaning that Takemi indirectly got another patient in critical condition, assuming the backstory that earned her the nickname "The Plague" is still intact.
  • Moment of Awesome:
    • Makoto disproving the school librarian's accusation that Akira stole a book.
    • During Chapter 13, Akira gives Kamoshida a Shut Up, Hannibal! speech about how he deserves to be locked up. Although this leads to him getting beaten black and blue, Akira manages to pave the way leading to Kamoshida’s downfall since his state is able to shake Kawakami out of her initial apathy and look into the abuses.
    • The ending of Chapter 15. Kamoshida finally leaves Shujin in handcuffs. To quote online gamer lingo: "gg get rekt".
  • The Woobie: Akira Kurusu. In addition to all the crap he has to go through per canon, we also get a deep look into his broken psyche, and it isn't pretty. In addition, with no Metaverse to bail him out when Kamoshida threatens him with expulsion, he utterly breaks down. The story goes into more detail of his hardships before coming to Tokyo. He has a distant relationship with his father which only got worse after his arrest. He has a sick mother who cares for him and is constantly worried for her. In addition, Akira reveals during his time in juvenile hall, he got unintentionally caught up in a fight between some inmates and was thrown into solitary confinement for 48 hours. Poor kid has been through a lot.
