YMMV / O'o: The Last Voice of Kauai

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight: The film as it is is already pretty depressing, but to those familiar with the fate of Kauaʻi ʻōʻō it becomes absolutely soul-crushing:
    • The bird in the movie is, according to the author, inspired by recording made by The Cornell Lab of Ornithology in 1987 of the last known Kauaʻi ʻōʻō bird. The song is a call for its mate which will obviously never come. To make matters even more gut-wrenching, the song is supposed to be a duet, with clear pauses meant for the willing female to sing in. Nothing feels more lonely than this incomplete song ...
    • Also, according to the recorders from The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, when they listened to recording the Kauaʻi ʻōʻō came back and sung again, not knowing it is not a female. Talk about Hope Spot.
    • And to nail it further, Kauaʻi ʻōʻō was the last living member of Mohoidae family, meaning now the whole family is extinct. Great job, humans.
  • Tear Jerker: The whole animated short. Much worse if you're familiar with the history and demise of Kauaʻi ʻōʻō.
