  • Alternate Character Interpretation:
    • Why do the aliens spare Brynn at the end? Respect? Empathy? Pity? The aliens are otherwise terrifying and unknowable so it's anyone's guess as to why they do what they do.
    • Brynn is seen dancing with both a man and a woman in the end. She also had an extremely close friendship with Maude. In their adolescence, Brynn and Maude had an argument in which Maude pushed Brynn away, causing Brynn to lash out. Did Brynn confess romantic feelings for Maude and get rejected?
  • Angst? What Angst?: After the aliens take over, Brynn is allowed to live amongst the human puppets as a free-thinking woman. However, as the entire town had spent the past ten years treating her like crap, she actually appears content with her situation, as everyone is much more friendly to her now.
  • She Really Can Act: While Kaitlyn Dever has already proven her acting ability, her performance here still surprised many people as she takes on a very different role from her previous work, supports almost the entire film by herself and makes Brynn compelling and three-dimensional almost entirely through her body language and facial expressions.
  • Spiritual Successor: This movie can be seen as a theatrical remake of "The Twilight Zone" episode The Invaders. Both are about isolated women who says very little and both are living alone in a barren farmhouse trying to survive an alien invasion in the middle of nowhere. They even both have the woman successfully fight off some of the aliens with a plot twist about how the aliens may not be the bad guys and the woman may not be all that good.
