• Complete Monster: Andras is a cruel and ancient demon of discord. Throughout history, Andras would regularly possess people and slowly ruin their lives and manipulate the lives of those around them, having a hand in several historical atrocities such as the Red Scare. Subjecting Gretchen Lang to a violating possession, Andras began to manipulate her friends such as tricking Margaret into drinking tapeworm eggs, which nearly kills her, or making Glee believe the school chaplain was in love with her and causing her to try to commit suicide when she learned he didn't. When captured by Abby, Andras reveals future plans of his, such as talking one student into committing a school shooting.
• Tear Jerker: As tongue-in-cheek as the book gets at times, the ending is packed with bittersweet emotion. Despite the occasional distance put between them by growing older, Abby and Gretchen really do remain the best of friends until the very end. The Distant Finale follows Abby to the end of her life as she dies, elderly and sick, with Gretchen holding her hand. They didn't live to see Halley's Comet together again, but as the closing words note, "they tried."
