YMMV / Monkey King Reborn

• Jerkass Woobie: Wukong. While he acts like Jerk Jock and a Big Brother Bully towards almost anyone around him the majority of the time, it's heavily implied (and eventually confirmed) that this behavior is the result of a hefty Inferiority Superiority Complex, caused by being born as a stone-demon with no parents. While Wukong shows kindness to almost no one, the world at large isn't really kind to him either with most immortals dismissing him from the get-go for being a demon. Is it any wonder he internalized the Fantastic Racism at one point?
• So Okay, It's Average: While reception of the film has been positive overall, there seems to be a general consensus that it doesn't really hold a candle to its contemporaries in the Chinese animation industry. Many viewers often compare it unfavorably to other movies like New Gods: Nezha Reborn (2021) or Monkey King: Hero Is Back.
• They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Wukong's anger issues are often mentioned at the beginning of the movie, with the trailers also putting an emphasis on how he has difficulty controlling his temper, making it seem like learning to control himself will be a big part of the movie's plot. In the actual film, while Wukong's anger is what ends up freeing the Big Bad, he never really shows any trouble controlling himself after the incident and no one else in the main cast brings it up again either.
• Visual Effects of Awesome: The film is animated beautifully, with a number of breathtaking scenery shots and extremely well done fight scenes.
