YMMV / Modern Talking

Go To

  • Awesome Music: "Win the Race" and "Ready For the Victory" ended up becoming the anthem for Formula One in Germany in 2001 and 2002, respectively.
  • Broken Base:
    • Perhaps the base breaker among German music fans. Depending on who you ask, Modern Talking's songs are either overcommercialized and uncreative or among the greatest songs of the 1980s.
    • Among Modern Talking fans: Is Dieter Bohlen or Thomas Anders to blame for the both breakups of Modern Talking? Or do both carry their share of blame?
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff:
    • Modern Talking are wildly popular in Russia, up to the point where Dieter Bohlen was honoured by the Soviet government in the late 1980's as a 'Hero of the Soviet Youth'.
    • While they never managed to crack the American pop charts, they gained a cult following among the Vietnamese diaspora in California. If you go to any record store in a Vietnamese neighborhood, you'll find a lot of artists that were inspired by them.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In 1998, after Modern Talking reformed, they released an album entitled Back for Good, with Anders and Bohlen on happy terms. Come 2003, the band broke up the band again and as of 2019 (when Dieter decided to unilaterally release sole renditions of some of their songs), it ironically seems to be for good.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: While their second stint from 1998 to 2003 where they remixed their songs at first can get a pass, Dieter's sole renditions of certain Modern Talking songs in 2019 could be grating, especially considering that he's 65 when these versions of the songs started coming out.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: Listen to "Juliet", and try not to think of "Starlight" by The Supermen Lovers.
