- Anvilicious: The titular character is going up against the ever so powerful and corrupt "Gun Lobby", as they fight against a bill that would increase regulations on firearms. Thus, it has a very pro-gun control sentiment.
- Harsher in Hindsight:
- John Madden (the director) is a gun control activist and stated in multiple interviews he hoped the film would change minds. The film ended up being one of the biggest bombs of 2016.
- Tying into that, the fact that this is the third of four massive flops in Jessica Chastain’s career, the other three being The Huntsman: Winter's War, The Zookeeper's Wife and most especially Dark Phoenix.
- Hilarious in Hindsight: A number of critics noticed the resemblance the script had to the works of Aaron Sorkin, what with its politics, the speeches, the dialogue rhythms, the obscure (and not so obscure) trivia in that dialogue, and the complicated structure. Jessica Chastain would end up working with Sorkin a year later on Molly's Game.
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Under the right hands, the film could have been a Spiritual Successor to American Crime Story, showing both sides of the argument. As stated above, the film is instead very one-sided.
