YMMV / Miraculous Ladybug S05E14 "Derision"

  • Broken Base: This episode split the fanbase into two camps: those who saw it as an interesting piece of backstory that nicely explains a controversial aspect of Marinette's character, and those who saw it as a mess of a plot that made little sense on closer inspection and heavily derailed at least one character in the process. And that's without getting into how it contributed to the already-existing debates over the characterizations of Adrien (over how he once again attempted to Cataclysm a human, as well as how it apparently took this incident to finally dump Chloé as a friend despite witnessing her bullying for five seasons now) and Chloé (largely over whether or not it makes sense for her to have traumatized Marinette this badly).
  • Designated Hero: Although the narrative marks Adrien ending his friendship with Chloé as correct, you have to take into account that Adrien's breaking point was learning that Chloé's prank prevents Marinette from confessing to him, taking into account all the things Chloé did (betraying Team Miraculous, constantly mistreating her classmates in front of him, helping Hawk Moth in the form of voluntary Akumas, etc) giving the feeling that Adrien only came out on top when Chloé's bad actions directly affected him.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Pretty much every moment in the show where they play Marinette's flustered reactions towards Adrien and borderline stalking of him for comedy feels incredibly awkward and hard to laugh at in hindsight, considering how this episode reveals that all of those moments are a direct result of her getting traumatized by bullies in the past.
  • Salvaged Story: This episode goes into why Marinette overplans talking to Adrien, which bordered on stalking at times. She was traumatized by a prank Kim pulled on her by Chloé's suggestion.
