YMMV / May December

  • Award Snub: The film received only one Academy Award nomination (screenplay), with all three lead actors Charles Melton, Julianne Moore, and Natalie Portman, as well as director Todd Haynes, being snubbed. Of these, Melton (Joe) is generally agreed to be the most egregious, unfortunately the Supporting Actor race that year was heavily stacked, with heavyweights like Willem Dafoe also not making the cut. The lack of recognition is generally attributed to Netflix's disinterest in promoting the film to award voters and the very stacked year in the acting categories.
  • He Really Can Act: Many were blown away at Charles Melton's nuanced performance as a sweet, emotionally stunted victim of grooming in the film, given how his most famous role before this was as a stereotypical Jerk Jock in the widely-ridiculed Riverdale series. To say it was a shock to see him be in contention for various esteemed film awards would be an understatement.
