YMMV / Little House On The Prairie S 4 E 8 The Aftermath

  • Accidental Aesop: Don't leave your children in the dark about dangerous people around them. After it was confirmed that the strangers in town were indeed the infamous James Brothers, Charles and the other townsmen decide to keep their suspicions, fearing that the bounty hunters could start a shootout and bystanders could be get in the crossfire. But in not warning Mary, who had been working for the James Brothers unaware of who they were, she wound up deciding to visit them in secret just as the Jameses realized there was a posse looking for them, and decide to take Mary hostage out of desperation. Had Charles warned Mary that the polite strangers in town were not only probably dangerous, but the infamous James Brothers, she probably wouldn't have visited them and be taken hostage.
  • Strawman Has a Point: Bob Ford's father scolds Miss Beadle for suggesting a discussion on the Civil War from a neutral perspective and cites how his older son was killed by Confederate militias, and she rebuffs by arguing that putting an end to war resentment is the best solution and then calling him out on fueling his surviving son with resentment on their loss. Thing is, the war was too recent an event, leaving wounds a lot of the townspeople hadn't fully healed, including losses of loved ones, so it makes nly sense people weren't ready to discuss it from neutral viewpoint. Not to mention she calls him out on basically telling his son how his older brother was a victim of war, something Mr. Ford has every right to, and it's callous thing to scold a father for.
