YMMV / Little House On The Prairie S 4 E 2 Times Of Change

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: John's relationship with the other girl: Did he have feelings for her or, given her snotty attitude, was he only with her for her looks and to forget about Mary?
    • His change of feelings for Mary. Did he really stop loving her or did he conclude his new life in the city wouldn't be fitting for her and so decided to cut ties but couldn't bring himself to do so personally?
    • His work at the newspaper that only publishes what the corrupt Grange approves: Another sign of being corrupted by the city, or just a job he took because writing is what he does best and he doesn't particularly approve of his employers' ethics?
    • Charles' voting for government control against the Grange's agenda: Did he do so just to spite the Grange or did he have any reasons to vote for government control out of principles?
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The Grange's men wanted to vote against government control, which Charles votes for due to seeing how the corrupt couldn't be trusted to act on its own. At the Season Finale, we see the railroads' predatory effect as they unsurpivised and strangle the small farmers, causing Walnut Grove to go bankrupt and the townspeople to move from there, leaving an abandoned Ghost Town.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Among the city novelties John shows Mary is chewing gum, and in the moment he talks about an appointment to excuse himself (presumably to meet the girl he's cheating on Mary with) there's a shot of John's face with a billboard behind him advertising "Adam's chewing gum". Guess the name of the man marry would marry years later.
  • Ron the Death Eater: Many viewers believe John Jr. became a womanizer who cheated on Mary with countless women, even though he's only ever been show to have one girl, and nothing confirms he had affairs with any other girls. They also believe he Took a Level in Jerkass and became every bit as corrupt as any villainous City Slicker, when he's fairly polite, if distant throughout the episode, and the next episode about him will reveal he died while trying to investigate corruption in the city, showing there was still some good in him, and the major problem was his losing his love of Mary.
