• Fair for Its Day: The episode is as anti-prejudice towards Native Americans as it gets, despite the title character being played by a non-Native actor (most Native American children were played by Latino and/or Ambiguously Brown actors as it was harder to get real Native child actors then) and the inclusion of the slur "Injun" in the title, even if only the bigoted characters use it during the episode.
• Harsher in Hindsight: Spotted Eagle's mother Amelia said she started living with the Sioux after working as a teacher at an Indian school. Said schools were eventually denounced as a program to erradicate the Indian culture by indoctrinating Native American kids into the European way, down to abusing and mistreating them, making Amelia's conflict with her close-minded father tragically ironic.
• Retroactive Recognition: Seth Johnson is played by Willie Aames, who had just started a 4 1/2-year run as Tommy Bradford on Eight is Enough, and would later go on to play Buddy Lembeck on Charles in Charge.
