YMMV / Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe

  • Best Known for the Fanservice: Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe is one of Edouard Manet's most famous paintings because it caused scandals for its risque content. At the time, nudity in art was only acceptable when it came to fantasy creatures like nymphs, angels, mermaids, fairies, etc. Meanwhile, this piece shows an everyday woman sitting in public, completely naked alongside two (clothed) gentlemen.
  • Reviews Are the Gospel: Academicism was a movement that instilled rigid rules of proportion and composition. Its stance on any artwork that didn't meet a selected cream-of-the-crop masters' standards can be summed up as "If the Salon [of Paris] rejects it, it's not art". It became so bad that people like Édouard Manet started the Impressionist movement just to spite the masters and free art of the stifling regulation. Examples are Le Déjeuner Sur L'Herbe and Olympia.
