YMMV / Kid Eternity

Go To

  • Anvilicious: Nocenti's run handles topics like mixed race marriage, trash tv and prejudices against supposed "insanity" as subtly as a colonoscopy with a mallet.
  • Broken Base: Wether the Cerebus Retcon pulled by Morrison in order to make the Kid Darker and Edgier was needed or not? It's either a cheap attempt at True Art Is Angsty or a succesful revamping of the character for a new generation.
    • Should Kid Eternity be related to Captain Marvel Jr.? And should his name be Kit Freeman, or should he be The Nameless?
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: The Kid is this to the larger Vertigo universe as a whole.
    • Of all the characters Kid Eternity brings back from the dead, Nikola Tesla is a fan favourite despite appearing in a single issue: He instantly proves to be the most competent, intelligent man in the room and gives the Kid a pretty poignant What the Hell, Hero? speech to KE.
  • Four Lines, All Waiting: What killed the 1993 series, since it juggled too many plots for anyone to get invested into or even make sense: Just in the first issue has the main plot of Kid Eternity trying to find a couple to birth a new Messiah, Jerry dealing with having been reborn in a new body, his potential romance with Val, our introduction to Hemlock and her hacker group, Madame Blavatsky getting involved in modern culture, a group of demons from the Vatican being freed and killing potential parents for the new Buddha Baby, Cupid being stranded on the modern day and the Greek Pantheon awakening and declaring war on Kid Eternity.
  • So Okay, It's Average: The general consesus of the Ann Nocenti run. While not one of Vertigo Comics's top comics it's still quite enjoyable, despite being a bit too ambitious for its own good.
  • The Scrappy: Hemlock, for having an unrelated confusing plot that often interrupts the already confusing main one that nobody really liked and being a pretty blatant rip-off of Lenny, from Shade, the Changing Man.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: The Nocenti run has a nasty habit of introducing characters just to immediatly drop them: The Stalker, Dog, Mister Keeper, Doctor Pathos, Infinity, Cupid and the Greek Pantheon...
  • What the Hell, Costuming Department?: The Kid's initial costume in the 1993 comic. A pitch white onesie with weirdly mounted Round Hippie Shades and long oily hair? This is weird considering the original costume and the Morrison revamp are considered very good. Nocenti apparently took notice and after a stance in Doctor Pathos' asylum he begins sporting a leather jacket with his initials and much shorter, slightly androgynous hair.
