• Angst? What Angst?: Kumi was raped repeatedly by an unknown number of kemono and made to give birth to many, many monstrous children by Shiki's uncle to create Aya, a kemono capable of producing the Golden Thread. Despite this and being separated for years from her son Shiki and her daughter Aya, she's still a well-adjusted, bubbly individual ready to rejoin society.
• Diagnosed by the Audience: It's implied that Kabane's abusive childhood has left him with a form of alexithymia, an inability to properly identify and express emotions. Kabane struggles to read the mood of a room, speaks candidly without any filters, and grapples with concepts like "love", showing great interest in trying to better understand them. While he gradually improves through experience, he continues to be awkward in social situations because of his tendency to bottle up his feelings because he can't express himself properly.
• Iron Woobie: Kabane in spades. His self-esteem was utterly destroyed at an early age by his abusive aunt and his cousin Yataro, to the point that basic kindness is a novelty to him. His aunt never sent him to school, exploiting him for manual labor, and it's implied that he's never celebrated his birthday and that he's never been told anything about what his parents are like. It's even implied that he's never had a bed to sleep in and that he's underfed. Upon discovering his true nature, he's utterly horrified by the revelation and was thoroughly convinced that he was a monster until Inugami explained the existence of Kemono to him.
• Memetic Mutation: Kabane doesn't die when he's killed. Shirou's a liar.^note Inugami's frequent discussions about how Ghouls don't die when they're killed brings Shirou's most infamous quote to mind for many readers.
• The Woobie:
  • Shiki's mother, Kumi. Nobody should ever have to experience what she went through. Thanks to Inugami's unit rescuing her, she's getting better.
  • Yui, Akira's brother. Was raped hundreds of times as a kid, just so he could protect his little brother. He loves his brother that much. And just like the other woobie on this list, he is getting better.
