YMMV / Kaze no Shōjo Emily

Go To

  • Accidental Nightmare Fuel: The art style puts off some viewers because it depicts realistic large anime heads on small children's bodies.
  • Audience-Coloring Adaptation: In the Middle East, Western Literature isn't as well known as it is in it's home area, so this anime was the first introduction they had to the Emily Of New Moon. It's to the point that even the original book is referred to as "فتاة الرياح إيميلي " (Wind Girl Emily), the anime's Arabic title over there.
  • Broken Base: A lot of debate has gone on whether the anime or the books are better. Some fans agree that while the anime is great, reading the original books gives you a better appreciation of it.
  • Cult Classic: The anime holds a special place amongst the hearts of L. M. Montgomery's readers even if it's approach towards the source material is largely different.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Francis Carpenter was always a popular character, but he's one of the most highly regarded characters amongst the Arab fanbase because of Arabic cultural attitudes towards teachers being similar to Japanese ones.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Emily/Teddy was this way before it was made canon.note
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Very popular amongst Arabs, to the point videos about it even circulate on Arab-language Tiktok. It received a fan made Arab-language Compilation Movie that received critical reception. It also recieves a lot of AMVs and reviews in Arabic.
  • Iron Woobie: Emily suffers her father dying and being relegated to the custody of uncaring relatives, is forced to uphold a certain social image for being a Murray and relentlessly debased for wishing to be a writer. Nevertheless, she pulls through while being stubborn and showing kindness to Ilse, Perry and Teddy, which draws them to her. It gets even more shocking in the second half, with the death of Francis Carpenter and her angst about if she'll ever see Teddy again. Yet, she still takes Mr. Carpenter's words to heart and becomes a great writer, and years later is married to her childhood love.
