YMMV / Jurassic Park: Dinosaur Battles

Go To

  • Anti-Climax Boss: The boss variants, especially those of Tyrannosaurus and Spinosaurus can pose a good challenge for all of your dinosaurs... except the Ankylosaurus who, due to having the Spiked Armor ability, is practically invincible by design, unless your opponent has "Piercing" attacks. Taken up to eleven if fighting against the Final Boss, who become an impossible-to-lose Damage-Sponge Boss.
  • Awesome Music:
    • The Boss Battle Theme is a frenetic, fast-paced track that fits in well when it comes to battling against foes, especially the Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus.
    • The Final Boss Theme, which is a remix to the normal boss theme captures the intense situation you're put into when fighting against the Prime Spinosaurus. While undoubtedly hard (Unless you're the Ankylosaurus), the time makes the battle more enjoyable to an extent.
  • Game-Breaker:
    • The Ankylosaurus can easily come off as this, primarily because it inherently possesses the Spiked Armor ability. Unless they have a Piercing attack, any attack directed towards the Ankylosaurus is instead reflected back on the attacker instead. It is actually impossible to lose against the Prime Spinosaurus because it just doesn't have a Piercing move to combat the Ankylosaurus. And to top it off, only about a few types of Velociraptors (namely the Slasher, Mature, Temple Guard, Maze Guard) and two variants of Dilophosaurus (Lab Guard and Maze Guard) have Piercing moves to combat the Ankylosaurus and even then, they can be easily defeated by another dinosaur with good enough skills and stats.
    • Should you defeat the Final Boss using the Spinosaurus, you unlock the "Pouncing" move variant, "Rising Stun". While it does slightly more damage than the other versions, there's an added bonus; it actually restores your stamina as opposed to depleting them. However, by the time you acquire such a move, you've already completed the game, so it comes across as a Cosmetic Award.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The game's story is essentially a camping group getting lost on an island full of dinosaurs, namely Isla Sorna. 18 years later, another group of campers would become lost in another island full of dinosaurs, this time being Isla Nublar.
  • One-Scene Wonder: A pair of Pteranodon are shown for exactly one scene. One of them is rewarded to you after defeating the Lab Guard Triceratops while the other guards the bridge that leads you to the fifth map. They fight against each other, causing the bridge to collapse into a passageway and fly away.
  • That One Boss: While the bosses range from being easy to moderate in difficulty, the Prime Spinosaurus manages to prove itself as a very tough and frustrating challenge. It has a large health and stamina pool, hits hard and can catch up to you quickly. What is most frustrating about the Prime Spinosaurus is that it has a ramming attack that not only strikes you quicker than most of your own attacks but also leaves you stunned, leaving the Prime Spinosaurus to assault you with another attack while you're helpless to do anything about it.
