• Harsher in Hindsight: In one strip, in the early 2000s, Joe pulls over some guy for what he calls "DWD" (Driving While Distracted) as the suspect is trying to multitask behind the wheel, with each action more ludicrous than the last. It becomes less funny in recent years as distracted driving has become a very serious issue.
• Unintentionally Unsympathetic: When Dana was introduced, she was a down-on-her-luck homeless woman, helped out by Marcy and others. We find out later she's the daughter and heir to sweet old rich lady Eunice, whom Dana resented so much she pretended to be homeless to hide from her. Many readers swiftly grew sick of Dana's Poor Little Rich Kid act. This was not helped by an attempted Author's Saving Throw: The "reveal" that Eunice was an overbearing parent, who messed up Dana's head with her pressure and demands. We got to know sweet old lady Eunice first, so didn't buy the retcon.
