YMMV / Jane Eyre (1997)

  • Fan Nickname: "Angry Rochester" for Ciarán Hinds version of the character.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Some fans prefer to ship Jane with St. John over Mr. Rochester. It doesn't help the reaction to Ciarán Hinds' portrayal of Mr. Rochester in this version was mixed, mostly for being too aggressive and forceful.
  • Hollywood Homely: This film perhaps inverted this with casting the rough looking Ciarán Hinds as Rochester. However, Samantha Morton plays "plain and little" Jane while being arguably a world-class hottie.
  • Like You Would Really Do It: At the end of the scene where Helen comforts Jane after her punishment at Lowood, they smile at each other, and then the film abruptly cuts to the next scene with a shocking close-up shot of a dead girl in a coffin. Viewers who know what happens to Helen might momentarily think it's her. But the dead girl isn't Helen, she's just a random victim of the typhus epidemic, and Helen has her deathbed scene with Jane from the novel a few minutes later.
  • Never Live It Down:
    • Ciarán Hinds' Mr. Rochester in has a reputation for being shouty and too aggressive among many viewers.
    • This adaptation is infamous for its proposal and leaving scenes with Jane.
  • Signature Scene: "Explain the concept of 28-day week!" is probably the most well-remembered scene in this version.
