- Alternate Character Interpretation: When McTeague claps for Will at the end, is he just doing so for appearances, or did Will's final victory merit some Villain Respect from him?
- Ensemble Dark Horse:
- Self-Made Man and race sponsor J.W. Harper, played by David Ogden Stiers has some powerful presence and depth to his performance.
- Joe McPherson the other American musher and the first racer who's nice to Will, even though he's injured early in the race.
- The Badass Native Carey brothers have very little dialogue but are almost as popular as Joe. They aren't overly friendly to Will at first, but clearly respect him and are pretty skilled mushers.
- Harsher in Hindsight: Seeing Kevin Spacey's character take such an interest in Will can come across as this after allegations against Spacey for grooming and sexually assaulting young men surfaced.
- Moral Event Horizon: Race sponsor Angus McTeague is initially just a guy who wants to win a bet, not particularly likable but not really villainous. Then he responds to Will saving the life of one of McTeague's own mushers with no gratitude and just some frustration about how well Will is doing before bribing Borg to attack Will.
