** The film acts as this towards ''Film/{{Inception}}''. Time passing by at bizarre speeds, a father being separated from his children in a faraway location, [[spoiler:a TragicVillain who almost screws up the team's goals]], Nolan being in the Sci-Fi genre again, etc. Of course, the main difference is that the scale is much grander than ''Film/{{Inception}}'s'' smaller focus. Even lampshaded by Nolan himself in a couple of interviews.
** The film is a more practical and straightforward version of 1997's ''Film/{{Contact}}'', which also deals with an otherworldly message that triggers a drive for space exploration. In ''Interstellar'''s case, they actually have the logistics for space travel and [[spoiler:Cooper speculates that the messengers are advanced futuristic humans]], whereas in ''Contact'', the beings basically provide the means [[spoiler:and are extraterrestrial]].

Mann. While he ''did'' kill Romily with a bomb and also tried to kill Cooper he was clearly desperate to go home after being stranded on a frozen planet for god knows how long only to die himself. himself.
** Tom. He's not exactly pleasant as an adult, but on the other hand, he grew up as (arguably) TheUnfavorite, and had to watch at least one of his kids die in the years his father was away.

* VindicatedByHistory: Though it was always well received, around the time it came out it was seen as silly and nowhere near the level of works like Creator/ChristopherNolan's own ''Film/{{Inception}}'' and ''Film/TheDarkKnight''. Now, nearly ten years after its release, it's far, far more respected than anyone could ever foresee it becoming; it's common to see denizens of sites like Letterboxd and IMDB argue that this film is Nolan's masterpiece, citing elements like its heartfelt emotional moments, stunning visuals and epic soundtrack as standing as a cut above others in his filmography. Even outside those sites, it's common to see it cited as one of the best science fiction films of UsefulNotes/TheNewTens, if not of all time.

With their location being Calgary, Canada, this was actually a pretty massive risk (the high altitude and northern latitude do not lend themselves to ideal temperature and wind conditions for corn), but by the time of filming, it paid off. Not only did they get humongous cornfields to shoot practically on, they ended up selling the corn as a side gig and actually turned a profit.

In response, the remaining world governments keep growing the same crops the blight is preying on instead of trying different crops, grow everything outdoors instead of building greenhouses that could be quarantined (which is later shown to work, albeit in the form of spaceships), force the people who might cure the blight to farm instead, and deny one of humanity's most awesome moments in an effort to keep morale up.
