  • Award Snub: Laura Dern didn't receive any recognition from the Academy Awards for her starring role in this film which brought about a good backlash on the internet from viewers that believe she at least deserved a "Best Actress" nomination. Critics agreed, calling it possibly the best performance in her career.
  • Awesome Music:
    • "Ghost of Love".
    • "Polish Poem", which plays when Nikki defeats the Phantom and frees the Lost Girl. A beautiful song with a mystical and peaceful quality, it's almost a relief to hear it, as it signals that the Phantom's long reign of terror is finally over, and it keeps playing over the Lost Girl reuniting with her loved ones.
    • "Black Tambourine" by Beck
    • "Secrets Of The Life Tree" by Kroke
    • "Polish Night Music No. 1" by David Lynch and Marek Zebrowski. This is the music for Nikki's final showdown with the Phantom (which means it's used for THAT scene), and it's appropriately ominous, with quite a few Scare Chords.
    • Nina Simone's "Sinnerman", used for the ending credits sequence where Nikki presides over a party at her house to celebrate the breaking of the curse; the song helps bring home the feeling of victory over a dark force.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The "Loco-motion" scene, wherein suddenly about a dozen girls are dancing to a cheerful song. It's very at odds with the film's foreboding mood and it's never mentioned again. Nikki's bemused reaction is priceless, though.
  • Homegrown Hero: The curse and most of the people involved in it (most importantly the Phantom and the Lost Girl) have their origins in Poland, but it's American actress Nikki Grace who eventually breaks it.
  • The Woobie: The poor Lost Girl. She was married to an abusive man who turned into The Phantom when she dared to look for affection in a better man. The Phantom obtained supernatural powers, killed her lover and trapped her in a room where she would be forced to relive those horrible events for all eternity. Thankfully, Nikki rescues her.
