* UncannyValley: Averted, then played with. Synths are very life-like and physically indistinguishable from humans, except that they have bright green colored irises (though the self-aware Synths can hide this with contact lenses). Their movements are very stiff and stilted, however, and most of all their speech patterns are fairly simplistic, so it is actually easy to tell the difference between a normal Synth and a human - it's a ''behavioral'' "uncanny valley", not a physical one. Then this gets played with: the self-aware Synths act so "human" compared to the normal Synths that it is apparently ''very'' unsettling for humans in the story, used to Synths as just appliances. A self-aware Synth quipping a witty insult at them is as startling as if your microwave oven did it. Such as the WhamLine when Niska rebels and leaves the brothel, holding a knife to the female desk clerk and ''angrily'' declaring "Everything your men do to us, they want to do to ''you''" (which is so shocking that the clerk faints).
* WhatAnIdiot: Toby rejects the advances of a cute girl his own age, ''after'' she's kissed him, claiming he's in "love" with someone else. This someone being his family's synth maid, Anita, who he should know full well will never see him that way.

* FridgeHorror: Niska's reaction to the pedophile at the brothel becomes doubly understandable when she reveals that she's only nine years old and her creator/"father" "did not always treat me as a child."

* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Hester could be considered one for Niska while she's imprisoned, taking over her UnscrupulousHero tendencies but to a much larger extent most likely leading to a FaceHeelTurn.

* CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming:
** Early in episode 6, Niska [[spoiler: holds George hostage with a knife.]] Later in that same episode, [[spoiler: she helps him fix Odi and accepts George's hand when he holds it out to her. She even shares a secret that no one else knows.]] It's the first time we really see her trust someone (let alone a human!). George's speech is the moment where you see her start to thaw, and offers a sweet insight to George and Odi's relationship.
