• Esoteric Happy Ending: Barney and Robin get divorced. The gang has drifted apart to the point at which it was months between Robin and Ted seeing each other. The Mother has been Dead All Along and the series ends with Ted trying to get back together with Robin, though there is no guarantee that they would ever get together after years trying and failing.
• Fan-Preferred Cut Content: The alternate ending included on the DVD was something the show's creators had considered going with for the broadcast version, but they decided to stick with their original vision for reasons of artistic integrity. Fans tend to heavily prefer the alternate ending.
• Fridge Horror: Back in the show's pilot episode, Ted's son asked if being made to listen to the story of how his parents met was a punishment for something. At the time, it was intended to show the kids as brats who didn't want to listen to a heartwarming story, but the revelation that their mother had been Dead All Along ends up making it instead seem like they didn't want Ted dragging up potentially painful memories.
